The overlap checker is a pairwise tool: it shows you two funds at once. Pro's Portfolio Builder shows your entire portfolio combined: every fund's weight, their total blended overlap, your real fee drag in dollars, and a health score. If you hold 3 or more ETFs, the combined picture is different from any single pairwise check. It's the difference between checking two puzzle pieces and seeing the whole puzzle.

If you're happy re-typing your portfolio every time you want to check it, a spreadsheet works. Pro earns its keep on three things a spreadsheet can't do: (1) weekly email alerts when a fund you hold changes its fee, distribution yield or fund size, without you checking; (2) CGT modelling by entity type (individual vs SMSF accumulation vs pension phase) for switch decisions; (3) 10-year income projections with after-tax franking gross-up. All illustrative only. If none of those apply to you, the free tools are probably enough.
