VAF is the most widely held Australian bonds ETF at $3.45B AUM. Bonds tend to move differently to shares, when sharemarkets fall sharply, bonds often hold steady or rise, adding diversification. VAF holds 843 Australian government and investment-grade corporate bonds with average duration around 6-7 years. The interest rate cycle has significantly impacted bonds, VAF returned only 0.05% p.a. over 5 years to March 2026 as rising rates hammered bond prices. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns. The most recent year reflects the beginning of the recovery as the RBA began cutting. Whether bonds are appropriate depends on your individual circumstances, consult a licensed financial adviser.
