VAS is one way to own a slice of the Australian sharemarket in one trade, 316 of the largest ASX-listed companies, dominated by the four major banks and BHP. At 0.07% per year it is one of the lowest-cost funds on the ASX. Distributions carry a dividend yield of approximately 3.3%. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns. A portion of distributions typically includes franking credits; the franking rate varies each year and investors should check the current distribution statement. For Australian resident taxpayers, franking credits can reduce the tax payable on distributions; non-residents receive no benefit. The concentration in banks (33.6%) and materials (24.5%), which together represent nearly 58% of the fund, means VAS has historically underperformed sharply when those sectors are under pressure. VAS provides exposure to Australian companies only and does not include international markets.
