Cryptocurrency-related investments involve significant volatility and risk, and prices can move sharply in both directions. General information only, not financial advice. Crypto and blockchain ETFs on the ASX fall into two broad groups. Spot crypto ETFs hold a cryptocurrency directly, such as bitcoin or ether, through a custodian, so their value tracks the price of that asset. Blockchain ETFs instead hold shares in listed companies involved in digital assets, mining, exchanges or blockchain infrastructure, so they carry company and equity risk alongside exposure to the crypto market.
Both are far more volatile than broad-market share funds: large daily price swings are common, and a fund's value can fall substantially and stay down for extended periods. Regulatory treatment of crypto assets continues to evolve, custody and security arrangements differ between funds, and a fund can trade at a premium or discount to the value of its underlying assets. The table above lists the available funds by fund size. Read each fund's product disclosure statement and consider whether this exposure is appropriate for your circumstances.
